Building on a model
developed over the course of the JOBS Project, JOBS Bangladesh has
continued to focus on the development of private sector
enterprise. Whereas the focus of earlier JOBS efforts was on the
growth of the enterprises themselves, JOBS Bangladesh has targeted
specific populations such as adolescent girls, recovering drug users
or char-dwellers, as the beneficiaries of the new livelihood
options; helping the private sector enterprises to grow while
helping the beneficiaries to live.
Sectors are selected based
on the following criteria:
-
Products are in demand
locally, nationally or internationally
-
In the case of
international markets, products are exportable
-
Labor-intensive
production chains
-
Locally procurable raw
materials
-
Potential to double or
triple the worker’s compensation
-
Generate employment
for women
In looking for ways to
integrate its work with both micro-enterprise clients and larger
enterprises, JOBS Bangladesh follows the cluster approach to sector
development. Under this method, small and medium enterprises (SMEs)
contract with local micro-enterprises for intermediate products that
they can use to produce end products. By providing training to SMEs
and micro-enterprises in a cluster or group, JOBS is able to help
the SMEs meet market demand while also creating employment and
generating income for micro-enterprise workers.
Current JOBS Bangladesh
activities are engaged in several business sectors including
footwear, floor covering and cow-fattening to name a few. More
